Steel Nation Designs and Erects Pre-Engineered Metal Building (PEMB) for the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County.
McKeesport, PA – January 30, 2018 – Steel Nation, located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, submitted engineering designs to the Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County early in 2017 for a structure to enclose the clarifier tanks at its City of McKeesport location.
Typically, the Water/Wastewater industry uses traditional block and structural steel construction, but Steel Nation’s Marty Micko, P.E., VP proposed an innovative design for a Pre-Engineered Metal Building (PEMB) that offered several advantages over conventional construction methods. The project presented significant design challenges.
The authority’s assistant manager, Jack Ashton, said, “The Steel Nation team had to figure out a way to build the structure without contaminating the clarifiers, which are essentially, open containment vessels.”
Steel Nation’s Engineering team has established a reputation as problem solvers. Marty Micko brings more than 25 years of experience in electrical construction and design.
“We were very impressed with the design they submitted. In fact, we used their design for bid specifications,” said Ashton.
The project was awarded in March 2017 and construction began in June.
“The erection was quick and efficient,” said Ashton. “During construction they protected the integrity of the clarifiers as the building was erected over open basins.”
“One of the benefits of systems construction is that all the structural parts are engineered and fabricated in the factory,” said Marty Micko. “Erection can proceed efficiently because there is virtually no requirement for field modifications.”
Ashton said, “Our engineers and I have nothing but good things to say about working with Marty and Ed at Steel Nation. They are problem solvers who are exceptionally detail-oriented. The project couldn’t have gone more smoothly.”
